We had a wonderful breakfast and AGM at Segafredo Zanetti NZ last Sunday, thank you to our host Mario Archidiacono from Segafredo, and to all who attended. The AGM went smoothly and we are delighted to announce the Dante Committee for 2017:

Un'intervista a Giancarlo De Cataldo

Last year, some of you were present at Auckland University, where author De Cataldo discussed his works and the symbiotic relations between crime fiction and its adaptation into films and TV productions. Here below you can find an interview done by Matteo with him. The interview is in Italian.

Magistrato, traduttore, drammaturgo, autore di romanzi di grande successo e di sceneggiature cinematografiche e televisive, Giancarlo De Cataldo è un autore poliedrico vicino, e qui mi riferisco soprattutto alla sua capacità di lavorare con media differenti, più ad esempi americani che nostrani. Raggiunge il successo nel 2002 con Romanzo criminale, ma la sua produzione sterminata (che per esigenze di spazio vi invito a consultare qui) comprende anche moltissimi altri best-seller, l’ultimo, La notte di Roma, scritto a quattro mani con Carlo Bonini ed edito da Einaudi nel 2015. Attento scrutatore del mondo contemporaneo, Giancarlo De Cataldo ha la capacità rara, per chi come lui trae ispirazione dai capitoli più oscuri del nostro presente e del nostro passato, di riuscire a parlarne con lucida competenza ed invidiabile chiarezza.

1) Vorrei partire dall’oggi, e da quello che è successo alle elezioni americane di novembre. In un’intervista del 2009 a proposito del romanzo La forma della paura, che alcuni hanno definito “il primo thriller del mondo post-Bush” (La forma della paura, Giancarlo De Cataldo e Mimmo Rafele, Einaudi, 2009) dichiaravi che “la mitologia della paura ha condizionato fortemente i nostri ultimi anni. Ora però è stato eletto un Presidente americano che parla un linguaggio diverso”. Sono passati sette anni e a Barack Obama è subentrato Donald Trump. L’uscita dalla paura a cui accennavi ha lasciato il posto a scenari forse più angoscianti, perché meno prevedibili. Credi che sia di forme sempre rinnovate di paura che l’umanità senta oggi il bisogno di nutrirsi?

Quella frase andava bene nel 2009, oggi, probabilmente, ha un sapore antico. Naturalmente, né io né Mimmo Rafele potevamo pensare agli sviluppi che il terrorismo avrebbe assunto al tempo dell’Isis. La paura è, effettivamente, un sentimento primordiale, ineludibile, dell’essere umano: ai bambini raccontiamo fiabe terrificanti per insegnare loro l’esistenza dell’elemento numinoso, quella minaccia incombente che tutti finiremo prima o poi per avvertire nel corso dell’esistenza e che affonda radici nella nostra transitorietà. Moriremo tutti, prima o poi, e l’angoscia di morte ci domina. Dobbiamo imparare a conviverci, e usiamo le fiabe per avviare i nostri figli su questo duro sentiero obbligato. Nello stesso tempo, la paura è un formidabile strumento di pressione, potere, governo e ricatto delle coscienze. Chi si ricorda più dell’influenza aviaria, che avrebbe dovuto decimare il genere umano? E chi della mucca pazza? Furono paure reali, concrete, al loro tempo, e incisero sulle nostre abitudini, sul nostro stile di vita, sulla nostra esistenza. Possiamo dunque dire che abbiamo, sì, bisogno della paura, ma che dobbiamo anche imparare a
